I am an academic philosopher. Currently, I am an adjunct lecturer on HKU's MA in AI, Ethics, and Society. Before that I worked as a postdoc in at HKU, focusing on AI and language. And before that, I was managing editor of Inquiry, & research assistant for The University of Oslo's ConceptLab and for Herman Cappelen. Before that I got my PhD from St Andrews in 2016, supervised by Cappelen and Josh Dever.
My research interests are very wide, but the topics for which (my interest * my knowledge) is the highest include social and political philosophy of language, and philosophy of technology (and their intersections, such as using computational methods to analyse propaganda, or internet language and institutions.) At the moment, I am working on how best to attribute linguistic capabilities to system like language models.
On this page you will find information about my papers and books and other writings on the above, as well as various other projects & enthusiasms.
Some recent news:
September. I appeared on the new podcast I Think Therefore AI talking about the philosophy of language and intelligence.
August. I am due to present my paper tentatively titled 'Machine speech: the very idea' (coauthored with Xindi Ye of HKU) at the conference LLMs and Philosophy in Kanazawa in September.
